Looking for a church to connect with?
Ok. So you’ve arrived in town for uni, and the one thing you haven’t sorted out just yet is which church to connect with.
This little article is designed to help you decide whether Willows Presbyterian Church is the church for you, and let you know about some other options.
Rationally coherent, existentially satisfying
You need a both of these in a church. You don’t want to have to leave your brain at the door as you come in, but neither do you want to feel like you’re coming out of the deep freeze when you leave.
At Willows we put the Gospel and Scripture first in teaching, and we aim to live out the gospel as a church family. You get to keep your brain, and your heart.
Weekly services and groups
Our regular Sunday services are
8:30am followed by morning tea
11am followed by lunch (free)
6:30pm followed by supper.
No International Roast coffee in sight.
We also have weekly bible study groups during term time for adults and young adults. The young adults group meets on Wednesdays 7:30pm.
Service style
We take the bible seriously, are down-to-earth about prayer, and are working hard to grow together as a Christian community. You’ll need to keep your Bible open during our sermons.
We sing both old hymns and ‘choruses’, regularly introducing new music.
Communion is held periodically, about once per term.
The morning services tend to be family oriented, while the evening service is slighly more youth oriented.
About the Pressies (Presbyterian church)
The things which make Presbyterian churches different from other churches is our church ‘government’. Rather than having bishops or priests, our church is governed by elders (also called the session). Hence the name ‘presbyterian’ (from the greek presbýteros meaning elder). The minister is simply the ordained teaching elder.
We also hold to the Westminster Confession as a subordinate standard to the Bible. The Westminster Confession was written as a summary of beliefs as drawn from the bible, on topics such as predestination and baptism.
There is a great deal of freedom of style aside from church government and the confession. Willows Presbyterian would class itself as having contemporary concerns, but conservative evangelical roots.
